BmNPV (Bombyx mori nuclear polyhedrosis virus) is one of the principal insect-baculovirus expression system. This system is mainly adopted in China and Japan where there is a long history of silkworm rearing. The study of BmNPV can be traced back to the same period as AcMNPV. In 1985, researchers successfully expressed human interferon alpha (IFN - α) in silkworm hemolymph using BmNPV. However, due to the problem of silkworm rearing, the level of research and commercialization of BmNPV BEVS are far lower than AcMNPV.
In BmNPV system, silkworm larvae are utilized as the host. As a bioreactor and host, silkworm larva has obvious advantage in terms of cell size compared with AcMNPV. After decades of optimization, the process from the construction of BmNPV expression vector to the production of recombinant protein has become very simple and fast. Consequently,
Compared with other systems, the advantages of BmNPV system are still obvious although it is only infectious to silkworm.
